Phosphatidylserine is a chemical that is used by the body for normal cellular structure and function. The body can make phosphatidylserine, but gets most of what it needs from foods or from a vitamin for brain health. It is naturally found in beef, oysters, cabbage and soy. Phosphatidylserine supplements used to be manufactured from cow brains, but are now commonly manufactured from cabbage or soy. The switch in manufacturing was a result of mad cow disease and the concern of possible transmission of the disease to humans.

Phosphatidylserine enables your brain cells to metabolize glucose and to release and bind with neurotransmitters, all of which is important to learning, memory and other cognitive functions. As we age our brains produce less phosphatidylserine. Phosphatidylserine supplements have been used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, and can improve some of its symptoms including attention, language skills, and memory.

There is a promising new study published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics that has discovered phosphatidylserine supplements improve the functioning of genes involved in degenerative brain disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. It altered the level of a total of 2400 other genes, hundreds of which have been connected to Parkinson’s disease in previous studies.

Phosphatidylserine Benefits: Nutritional Supplement Delays Advancement Of Parkinson’s And Familial Dysautonomia

The findings, which have been published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics, are very encouraging, says Prof. Ast. “That we see such an effect on the brain – the most important organ in relation to this disease, shows that the supplement can pass through the blood-brain barrier even when administered orally, and accumulate in sufficient amounts in the brain.

Phosphatidylserine Benefits

Research continues to come in on specific phosphatidylserine benefits, but in over 3,000 published papers the research has established that phosphatidylserine can rejuvenate your brain cell membranes. Benefits of vitamins that promote brain health include: strengthening your memory, increasing attention, concentration, and mental acuity, and boosting learning capacity. They have also been documented to help relieve depression, improve mood, and decrease stress. Since phosphatidylserine is well tolerated at recommended doses with limited side effects, it might be considered one of the best supplements for brain health.
