As our bodies age so do our brains. The signs of brain aging are not always as obvious as the outwards signs of aging. Most of us would say that forgetfulness is one of the signs of an aging brain.

Do you ever walk into a room and forget why you went into it in the first place? Do you ever lose your keys or glasses? Do you ever forget where you parked your car? Do you forget your shopping list you so carefully wrote so that you would remeber what to buy?

Most of the time we can recall what we have forgotten. Go back to where you were before, and just why you went into the other room will pop back into your head. Look long enough, and you will find your missing item. Set off you car alarm, and your car will call you. You can still shop and get most of the items on your list. These little inconveniences may be a thing of the past by eating healthy food for the brain! The Mediterranean diet may be a healthy brain diet.

New research suggests that brain function test score averages were significantly higher for two groups on the Mediterranean diet, than for a control group on a low fat diet. Catharine breaks down the trial results in a paper that was published online this month in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, which is published by the BMJ.

Omega 3 Benefits

Another recent study showed that Omega 3 may have a positive effect on gradual memory loss associated with aging. The Omega 3 benefits increase as more studies are conducted. Studies suggest that Omega 3’s may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The more we learn about Omega 3’s the more we realize how essential they are to our diets. Try adding more foods that support brain health to your diet or take a supplement that contains Omega 3 fats.
