CoQ10 Benefits: First Supplement To Improve Heart Failure Mortality
What is Coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 for short), is a vitamin-like substance that is found in the mitochondria cells. It is required for the basic funtioning of cells. The body does produce CoQ10, but levels of it are reported to decrease with age, and also with some chronic diseases like heart conditions, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Some prescription drugs may also lower levels of CoQ10.
CoQ10 levels are decreased in the heart muscle of patients with who have experienced heart failure. Statins are used to treat many patients with heart failure because they block the synthesis of cholesterol, but these drugs also block the synthesis of CoQ10. Their use then further decreases levels of the coenzyme in the body.
A recent double blind trial has shown the administration of CoQ10 supplements improve heart failure mortality in those who have experienced heart failure. Other than the use of statins, this is the first form of treatment to have proven effective in improving the heart failure rate among failure patients in over a decade and the physicians who conducted the tests feel it should be added to standard treatment.
