Triclosan – “The FDA has ordered the makers of antimicrobial and antibacterial soaps to show that these products are safe and effective and halt disease spread better than ordinary soap and water.” …
Triclosan: FDA Finally Takes Action
The Chemical Is Currently Found In Antibacterial Soaps, Personal Care Products, And Even Tooth Paste
We hear a lot about dangerous chemicals in household and personal care products. One of the most notorious is Triclosan, which is found in many personal care and household products and has been shown over the years to cause hormone imbalances, low sperm count in men, and many other problems. We wrote about this in previous entries on these pages, in particular in a blog post on May 10 of this year. At that time, the FDA finally … after 35 years of inaction … announced it would look into the chemical and its use.
Well, it appears that the FDA is finally taking action to limit the indiscriminate use of Triclosan. As you’ll see in the article below, there is really no proof that Triclosan is even effective for what it’s supposed to be doing. The FDA is proposing a new rule that would demand companies using the chemical in their products not only demonstrate satisfactorially that the chemical is safe … but that it even works at all.
Here’s an article from Melissa Healy in the “Science Now” section of the Los Angeles Times:
http://www.latimes.com/ Dec 16
… exposure to high concentrations of these compounds (triclosan … used in liquid soaps and triclocarban … used in bar soaps, including many deodorant soaps) has been found to suppress thyroid hormone concentrations and to have estrogenic effects, including premature puberty in females and low sperm count in males. As the chemicals have been found in human breast milk, urine and blood, there is growing concern that the product’s widespread use may affect human health as well.
Avoid Dangerous Chemicals In Handsoaps & Personal Care Products
There is no necessity that demands you expose yourself or your family to dangerous chemicals when you wash your hands or your hair or when you brush your teeth! Where is it written that only chemicals that are proven endochrine disruptors are capable of getting us clean? There are many good and effectiive alternatives … many that work even better than the brands containing chemicals like Triclosan.
Do yourself and your family a favor and simply redirect your shopping habits to include healthy products in your home instead of those proven to wreak havoc on your health. You’ll be glad you did.
